Congratulations to Johnny Collins... Graig's List Contest Winner!

Nov. 22, 2009 - A.K. Promotions recently put together a little singing contest on Craig's list in Sacramento to see who they felt could sing the best version of the National Anthem.    The last time they did this back in Sept. 09, they found a phenomenal performer Lisa Gardenia of Sacramento and she brought the house down with a flawless rendition of the Anthem at a packed house for an IKF Kickboxing Show held at Tommy T's Comedy and Dinner Theatre in Rancho Cordova, CA..  This time around, our plans are not to disappoint.  After auditioning about a dozen contestants, the most impressive voice was that of Johnny Collins.  He not only sang with ease but seems to carry a confidence that may someday make him a star in the music industry.  Johnny will be performing the National Anthem at the upcoming IKF Championship kickboxing  fights this coming Sunday- Nov. 22nd.  The event will be held at the Doubletree Hotel in Sacramento, CA.   Shown Left- Johnny Collins performance of the National Anthem was flawless when he sang at the Doubletree Hotel in Sacramento for the IKF Kickboxing Championships promoted by AK Promotions.

Johnny Collins has been performing for audiences around the world since the early age of 7. Now 29 yrs old, highlights of his music career include touring performances in Singapore, Indonesia, Canada, and the United States for audiences as big as 35,000 plus. Since moving to Sacramento more than 6 years ago, Johnny has ignited a budding career as a local singer/songwriter, pianist and producer.

AK Promotions Produces

 First Class Comedy Show…

But some lessons learned for future events

There should be no more questions asked about the ability of California based AK Promotions to put on a first class event as it did with The Homeboys of Comedy Show this past weekend at the Dillon Theatre in Dillon, SC ( July 4th and 5th).  Those that attended the four shows would mostly agree that they were well done and achieve their goals of introducing top notch entertainment- in this case comedy- to the area.  All comedians on the show made agreed appearances and brought their ‘A Game’ each night.  James Stephens III, Barbara Carlyle, Harris Stanton and Ice Cream all showed why they are consummate professionals as they not only kept people laughing throughout the weekend but also throughout the year on the comedy circuit!

Could there have been more spectators? Yes! But on the Fourth of July many chose to stay in with their families but too, a major thunder storm that produce severe lightning and flooding and caused unsafe driving conditions certainly did not help the show.

However, on Saturday night, many more showed up and the comics felt their presence as each of them enhance their game and oh what a show! 94.3 Radio personality Pam Jordan kept the show moving as recording artist Ladaria Richardson, Randy Washington and Sonja added their outstanding singing talents to the show giving it that much more spice! Plus, Saxophonist and multi talented Demoine Kinney performed smooth sax solos to entertained the audience between shows and as they lined up in front of the theatre.

All performances were on a grand scale and there is no doubt this edition of the Homeboys of Comedy Tour would have done well in any city or arena in the world! Meetings are currently in progress to take the Homeboy of Comedy Tour concept to other cities as well.  DJ- Mr. Tim Causer and Lighting Specialist Mr. Bill Rogers worked well together as both of these professionals kept all comedians on time and cued perfectly throughout the evening.  Security was not a problem as Chief Deputy Douglas Pernell was on hand with a watchful eye.

There were certainly some lessons learned with the first production by AK Promotions in Dillon, SC. “We will go back to the table and review all areas of the promotion to make sure that we better calculate the dates and venue for events as well as better educate ourselves to the type of entertainment this area would like to see.  In addition to that, we also want to bring shows that represent diversity so that everyone will feel comfortable attending.  AKP is about promoting quality shows for everyone and our plan is to continue to move forward and bring more shows to Dillon County and surrounding areas. We plan to continue to gain in order to give back to the community with the support of the community” said AKP President/Promoter Johnny Davis after the show.

Special Thanks to Event Coordinator Lakiesha Dunson of Dillon, Dr. Blue of The Dillon County First Steps Program, Mrs. Eleanor Powers for her oversight of the show; ticket outlets M and M Beauty Supply and Trechic Beauty Shop both of Dillon; Eric Kelly of Kelly Worldwide Graphics of Raleigh, NC for producing the artwork for the flyers; And all the volunteer staff who assisted in making this production overall a success! Forward March!

Up Close and Personal

With Comedian, Musician and Activist

 Mr. James Stephens III

Special to the Dillon Herald from AKP Press Staff Writer  - Words like passion, commitment and talent should come to mind when you think of comedian James Stephens III formerly of Dillon County but now living in Cary , NC . He’s traveled extensively around the world for the last twenty or more years sharing his gifts. As a musician trained in classical music with the ability to impersonate some of our most notable celebrities like Bill Cosby and the late Ray Charles gives him a unique flare.  He’s truly one of the most exceptional people on the comedy circuit and anyone who has seen him perform will attest to that.  Watching Mr. Stephens sing, do impersonations and play the piano with mind-blowing elegance and grace is a site to see.  One wonders if those living in the days of great entertainers like Sammy Davis, Jr., Sam Cook or Dean Martin realized that they were witnessing greatness.

You are now forewarned that the inscriptions of greatness are etched in the framework of Mr. Stephens and one should take note and accurately record the annals of this immense story not yet complete but nevertheless destined for prominence.

Many will get their chance to witness Mr. Stephens in person this July 4th weekend in Dillon as local comedy fans will line the streets to attend Dillon’s largest comedy event called the Homeboys of Comedy Tour.  The event is also a benefit for Dillon County First Steps… an early childhood education program. Other top comedians on the circuit will join him for four shows of hilarious comedy at the Dillon Theatre . Comedians like Barbara Carlyle, Ice Cream and Little Willie. Plus, there will be a special appearance by another former Dillonite comedian who has been making his rounds on the comedy circuit Mr. Harris Stanton.  Stanton now lives in Brooklyn , NY .

At the time of this interview, Mr. Stephens was preparing for his 20th Annual James Stephens III Scholarship Gala which he formed two decades ago to assist youth entering college.  The event would go off without a hitch as it was held at the Progress Energy Center in Raleigh , NC .  Star-studded with an interesting list of celebrities like Oprah’s special friend Stedman Graham, basketball great Shaquille O’neal’s mother Ms. Lucille O’neal and Ernest Thomas better known as ‘Rog’ on the Black TV sitcom in the 70’s ‘What’s Happening’ to name a few.  This event was first class and gave glimmers of the Grammy Awards with beautiful models, great performances and emotional acceptance speeches that filled the air and left many onlookers in tears.  (It should also be noted that several students from Dillon , SC attended and received scholarships to assist their integration into college.)

AKP Press wanted to get an up close and personal look into what makes the man they call ‘Dafunnyman’ tick. We were also curious as to why he is so passionate about the plight of our youth today.  He speaks frankly about many issues affecting our youth and has many ideas he wants to initiate to remedy some of the problems plaguing all our youth but especially the African American youth who he sees as falling further and further behind in many areas of education etc.

We caught up with Mr. Stephens in his beautiful home in North Carolina .  He was flanked by many of the volunteers who would be working the Gala the following evening. He sat in one of his antique designed wing chairs shadowed by his wife and a black shiny Baby Grand Piano. You’re now invited to enter the world of the incredible and amazing Mr. James Stephens III!

Q. James…I know that you were raised in Dillon County… elaborate on what it was like growing up in the South and what perspectives it may have taught you in regards to the rest of the world, about family etc?

JS.  “Growing up in the South taught me a lot about family…It was a lot about hard work…my father taught me early on  about a man only has his word and I use that a lot.  At the age of four I worked in the cotton fields and learned the value of hard work.  I lost my father at eight years old and had to rely a lot on my older brothers and sisters who instilled in me at an early age the importance of being better…yes better than other kids that may be more privileged because of their race etc. in particularly coming up in the 60 and 70’s.  I learned that although things in life are hard and there might be jobs that are hard… most of them come easier as a result of my experience working in the fields and it also taught me how to persevere.”

Q. From this small town,  you manage to go to college and get a good education…tell me more about the college you attended, your majors and what college did to shape the person you are today?

JS.  “I attended Georgetown University , Seattle University and several colleges including Law School at the University of Washington and was the first black student body president on the West Coast before getting bitten by the entertainment bug.”  (James also majored in music which is evident in all of his brilliant performances in which he plays the piano and sings)  I got started in a small movie part with Bo Bridges and then signed up with different comedy competitions and worked at the Comedy Store and the Improv for 10 years.  I worked my butt off until I finally got my first break.  I co-starred in the comedy show called The Edge with Jennifer Anniston and Wayne Knight…my career took off from there.

Q. James, you’ve travel around the world showcasing your skills and you are certainly one of the most talented comedians on the circuit today…who and, or what was the inspiration for you to become a comedian?

JS. “When I was in high school there were a lot of mentors…people who actually cared about young kids.  There was a young lady who inspired me. She came back from college and saw that I had something special in me and she carted me around to talent shows and did what my mother could not do…that really inspired me.  There was also a couple that came to help me out after my father died and did a lot for me…they sent me to boys state and did a lot for me and were from the State of Washington (…James slightly indicated that the couple who helped him were white…not that it mattered but it is another example of how love and compassion crosses color lines) Since that time, I have traveled around the world and have truly been blessed to go out and do what I do.”

Q. Anyone who observes your impersonation of Ray Charles will immediately recognize that you could have easily played the role of Ray Charles that Jamie Foxx eventually did and won a Grammy for.  Being that you impersonate many characters…which one of them is your favorite and why… and the second part of that question is… have you ever thought about pursuing an acting career?

JS.  “I like doing Ray Charles but I would say that Bill Cosby is my favorite”  (Stephens quickly goes into an impersonation of Cosby so accurate you had to shake your head as to how authentic Stephens sounds like Cosby…he sent all those in the room into laughter!…)  and yes, I have done and still consider acting as an option.”

Q. I know that you have a great love for basketball but you also seem to have a sincere passion for helping youth.  I’m fascinated in hearing how you travel over 2 ½ hours each way several times a week to coach an AAU basketball team in Dillon. Is there something that you see missing in the lives of many of the youth today? What drives you to such commitment?

JS. “Well, I know that education is the key…we have to educate our kids and bring them to God and I always wanted to work with kids in an area where I grew up.  I also tell my kids that basketball is an intelligent man’s game…I manipulate them to let them know how important reading is.  I always wanted to work with the kid even when I was on the other side of the world.  Now that I’m closer, it’s nothing for me to travel 2 to 3 hours each way and 2 or 3 times a week to practice with my kids because I know how important it is.”

Q. James…if you had a magic lantern that would grant you anything…tell me three wishes you would make on behalf of the youth today?

JS.  “If I had three wishes…one will be that I wish that there was no racial prejudice and there were no Civil Wars and that everyone could see each other as the same.

…and next that all youth… (Not just black kids) could be educated and be able to travel and see the world.  Third wish would be… (He drops his head and the rooms becomes silent) “I wish I knew my father and wish my father was around and sometimes I think about myself and the things that I do.  I hear them talk about him and it seems that I am a lot like him.  I think my father would be with me more and travel around the world with me and he would really be proud and tell everyone “that’s my son” …and really be proud. “My son is in Europe and my son is with Earth, Wind and Fire…He would be so proud of me…that’s what I miss about not having a father.”  James alluded to the old adage that you can do anything with your father.  He speaks of Raymond Felton a popular basketball player from Marion , SC and recalls how much time his father spent with him and how important it is for fathers to be involved with their kids.

Q. Many years ago you developed the James Stephens III Foundation…tell me more about the annual Gala, its purpose, your wife’s involvement and who attends?

JS “…the foundation has been going for twenty years and we have people like Mrs. Willie McQueen a former school teacher from Dillon who has been supporting me for fifteen years.  It’s support like hers that keeps the event going. We became a charter foundation and my wife and I became partners. We have similar backgrounds.  She lost her mom at eight and we share the same passion to work with kids and we do what we can…whether in track or basketball…we try to help them as well as try and make sure they get a good education…we make it happen for them…buy books or shoes…if there is anything in our power, we try and help.”

Q. What do you feel is the greatest lesson you have ever learned?

JS   “…To know that you are only human and you are put on this earth for a short period         of time…as Dr. King said… it won’t be about how I traveled around the world or all the people I performed for…Dr. Maya Angelo, Steve Wonder, Ray Charles etc…the most important thing is that I helped somebody…because if you can help somebody in the short time that you are here on earth and make them better  then you make your life better and make the  world better.”

Q. Before my final question…You are performing as the headliner of the Homeboys of Comedy Tour in Dillon , SC on July 4th and 5th.    This area is your hometown.  Tell me what can all the comedy fans attending that weekend expect from you and the other comedians?

JS “It’s going to be great!  We have something for everyone.  I feel that church people need to realize that weekend… that comedy is real…although, I’m clean…some of the guys may not be as clean… but it will be a great show and they will enjoy it!”

Q. James finally…When the laughs stop and you are no longer performing or nearly as active as you are today…you would have accomplished all of your life’s goals and then some… How would you like to be remembered?

JS (…in a somber tone…) “I want to be remembered as a guy who loved children and tried to help these kids to be better…that’s all I want… people to say that he loved children…he really loved children and their education because that’s the only thing that will save the world…that’s it.”

One thing for sure, James Stephens III is the real deal.  In this writer’s opinion, he is truly on the verge of greatness and will be one of those people who will be a beacon-light of hope for many youth suffering from peer pressure and negative images in the media that tend to drive them in the wrong direction.  Mr. Stephens has proven that you can be raised in a small town like Dillon, Lakeview or Latta , SC for example and chase your dreams to greater heights.  His testimony is real and should be inspiring to those so quick to give up because their fathers are not present in their lives or they feel that no one cares etc.  Let his story give hope that you can and will be successful in life with passion, commitment, talent and dedication to your craft.

KICK'N  NEWSFLASH

Barbara Carlyle Set as Semi-Main Event

... for Homeboys of Comedy Show!

Most people have heard the lyrics "people get ready... there's a train a 'coming."  These lyrics come to mind  when the name Barbara Carlyle is mentioned!  People...get ready for a women who is as funny as any women on the comedy scene!  Carlyle makes no bones about the fact that she is a 30 year veteran and travels around the world showing her stuff.  She also makes it clear to anyone willing to listen, that the cards are not always stacked evenly when it comes to the balance of women verses men in the comedy business.  " Sometimes, I feel that I'm getting racked over the coals but I persevere anyway!"

Barbara Carlyle says that she doesn't necessary like to bash men but she has to tell the truth.  So, if it comes off that way than so be it!  In the same breath, she make it clear that she also exposes weaknesses that many women face today and how they fall prey sometimes to " weak lines" coming from men.

This is one stand up comedian who knows the business well. She has the ability to target diverse audiences from the mainstream, urban, and old school.  Stating "I just know how to read an audience and therefore able to cater my show to what makes the real difference...making people laugh!"  Barbara makes it clear though that she will go to many lengths to make sure that the audience is satisfied and begging for more when she leaves  town.  When asked how she handles a group that might be offended by some of her straight forward comments? She responded with " I know what to do...I might not directly say what I want... but sometimes I have to not only talk about the M$%$$ on the street but also remind people about the M$#@$ in the church as well!"  However, Carlyle makes it clear that if what she says on stage changes one's conviction to whatever they believe in...then they really didn't have much anyway.

OK, now those of you reading this know in advance where Ms. Carlyle will be coming from...so again, people get ready!

Barbara Carlyle will be the semi- main event on the Homeboy Comedy Tour for four exciting shows set for July 4th and 5th at the Dillon Theatre.  She will be the only female comedian performing on the show.  Tickets available at ticket outlets listed on this site.  Get Your Tickets Now!
