IKF Announces Inclusion of Semi Contact Division
in World Classic Championship Tournament!
IKF 'Semi-Contact ' Point Kickboxing© will be held in conjunction but in a separate room from the Annual IKF World Classic Kickboxing Tournament in Chicago, Ill- August 17,18,19 - 2007. The championship tournament host some of the best full contact fighters in the world in assorted styles of kickboxing.
Sacramento, CA-
November 21, 2006- The International
Kickboxing Federation (IKF)
noted by most as the largest sanctioning
body in the
world for sanctioning Kickboxing events
has decided to add its version of semi
contact - IKF
Point Kickboxing© (PKB) to its prestigious
IKF World Classic Championship
Tournament that's held annually.
The Tournament is
certainly one of the most awaited events
of the year for the amateur 'full contact'
Kick Boxer of assorted styles. Whether an
American Style Kickboxer (kicks above the
waist), International Style Kickboxer (leg
kicks) or a Muay Thai Kickboxer
(incorporates knees to body) most of those
who have attended the IKF World
Classic in the past have deemed it
the "Golden Gloves" event for
the electrifying sport of Kickboxing.
The IKF World Classic will be held in 2007 in the great City of Chicago, Ill. The event will take place over three days at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare Hotel. August 17th,18th, and 19th will be the days where top contenders from around the world will be for going for the knockout attempting to achieve their dreams of becoming an IKF World Classic Champion!
The
IKF World Classic stands alone when it
comes to top quality awards as well as
having the backing of an organization that
takes great pride in giving all participants
and trainers recognitions for their
efforts. Although the event in the
past was only for those fighting in full
contact bouts, the IKF has now opened its
doors to the world of semi-contact
fighting. On Saturday-August 18th
in a separate room at the Hyatt
Hotel, the IKF World Classic
Point Kickboxing divisions will be
determining who is the best semi-
contact fighter in the world!
Although knockouts are not allowed in the
PKB version of the event, the action will
be hot and heavy as combatants wearing
8-16oz boxing gloves (depending on
division) give their all to show they have
the form, skill and kickboxing talent to
outpoint their opponent in continuous
sparring action!
You don't need a knockout
to have great action and past IKF Point
Kickboxing tournaments have proven over
and over again to be full of
excitement! One thing for sure, you will
need to be well conditioned and ready for
the fierce pace of the 90 to 120
sec. bouts...don't take it lightly
or you
will get caught off guard. Qualified
judges and referees will be on hand to
assure that contact is kept to a medium
and they will be trained to recognize
whether a person is prepared for the event
etc. and make fair decisions for the
outcome of the bouts. Men,
Women and Children from 7 to 17 years old
will travel from afar to enter this
event! All of them will fight their
hearts out to become the IKF World
Classic Point Kickboxing Champion in
their specific divisions and take home a prestigious
new title and a beautiful award! In
fact, all who attend as in 0 conventional fashion of the IKF will receive an award.
Traditional point karate tournaments have flourished for years in the United States and abroad hosting hundreds of competitors on any giving weekend. Although IKF Point Kickboxing is still in its infancy in the U.S., other countries have been participating in this semi contact style of fighting for many years. Like the IKF World Classic "Full Contact" Divisions, competitors have come from African and European countries etc. to test their skills. The IKF encourages those experienced in semi- contact from other countries to compete in the IKF World Classic Point Kickboxing Championship.
Competitors in the IKF/PKB will have the opportunity to do the same on-line registration as the "full contact" competitors. Additionally, they will be able to reserve their rooms at the Hyatt and enjoy all the other activities surrounding the event. With the semi contact fighters merging with the full contact fighters on the same weekend at the same venue, its sure to be lots of fun! Moreover, the semi-contact fighters will get a chance to see what's ahead and prepare their grand entrance to the next level of competition. We look forward to seeing all of the parents, fans and future fighters as spectators to witness some of the best semi and full contact fights you can get in one weekend!
Johnny
Davis, who is the Director and Founder
of IKF Point Kickboxing is excited about
the opportunity to promote this event on
such a large scale and in conjunction with
the IKF World Classic Championship stating
" Its been five years since we had
our first IKF Point Kickboxing
event. With inquiries from around
the world to participate in such a
tournament, its great that those wanting
to particapate will now have their chance. The PKB divisions
are fun, safe and challenging!
I look forward to speaking with many of
you to request your school/gym's
participation in the event. It will
certainly be on the world scale and
continue with the staple of quality and
fairness that the IKF represents. We look
forward to seeing all of you there!"
Moreover, participants will have the opportunity to prepare for The World Classic at two other IKF/PKB events earlier in 2007. IKF/PKB Promoter Mr. Will Smith of Vanguard Promotions out of Durham, NC will be hosting his Carolina Triple Threat event April 20 and 21st, 2007 at the Durham Marriott Hotel. On Friday night- April 20th, the event will feature a special seminar from Johnny Davis on how to convert traditional techniques to effective Kickboxing techniques. Sat. April 21st, a Jujitsu and a IKF Point Kickboxing tournament will last for most of the day. The night-time event will roll into a full contact Kickboxing action in IKF title fights-assorted styles! Additionally, IKF/PKB Promoter Mr. Sean Griffin of Indian Trail, NC will host another event on May 19, 2007. You are encouraged to participate in these events to help you prepare for the IKF World Classic Point Kickboxing event later in August '07.
The IKF has made a great opportunity for those looking for "the next step out of the gym. "Additionally, for those doing the point karate, continuous fighting, aerobics Kickboxing classes or just sparring in the gym, now you will have a chance with a click of a button or phone call to enter this prestigious event. The IKF World Classic PKB has been long coming but is now here in the United States for the enjoyment, adventure and potential achievement of all who wish to participate!
Registration including expanded weight classes etc. for the event will be posted soon. In the meantime, you are encouraged to email your questions and comments to johnnyd@akpromotions.org .
PKB Footnote
IKF Point Kickboxing© was specifically designed for the beginner/intermediated Kick Boxer but will also assist the advanced fighter to better their skills. IKF Point Kickboxing allows one to concentrate on techniques as opposed to focusing on not being knocked out. Full gear is mandatory and knockouts are not allowed in IKF Point Kickboxing! However, there is contact and one can expect to feel the intensity of a fight just with reduced power. The contact is strictly enforced. You can only win a bout on points. The difference here is the style. For years, Point Karate tournaments have flourished all over the world but the techniques one uses in Point Karate tournaments (backfist, ridgehands etc.) are mostly ineffective in realistic situations and are not allowed in IKF Point Kickboxing. Men, Women and Children compete for beautiful awards and titles!
One who does IKF Point Kickboxing has to maintain the form and style of a kickboxer or most likely face defeat. IKF Point Kickboxing allows you to keep the form of a kickboxer as opposed to switching back and forth from more traditional style sparring in martial arts
Competitors who've done the tournaments and even Domination style fighting find that IKF Point Kickboxing is very different. Some of the differences are the 10, 12 and 16 oz boxing gloves and real boxing techniques (jab, hook, cross etc.) as well as the continuous fighting that challenges the conditioning level of each competitor. Matches are one, two and three minutes in duration. IKF Point Kickboxing is the next step out of the gym for the eventual full contact fighter of assorted styles.

Point Kickboxing©
Results
( Exciting pictures from the event coming soon)
The showdown was on this past Saturday at Roseville, CA Lord's Gym a nice community outreach facility and now host to IKF Point Kickboxing events. Over 30 fighters in assorted sizes and genders showed up to Bring It On for the IKF Point Kickboxing tournament this weekend. The great thing about this tournament is that they had plenty of fans in tow. This made for some huge and exciting fights as each team cheered on their fighter (s). Fans got a chance to witness over 30 rounds of fights including over-time bouts for only $5...what a deal!
As usual there were some heated battles for the beautiful 4' trophies. Some bouts even overheated as there was one disqualification for too much contact. Don't get me wrong, this is not just a "pity pat" event. Yes, there is some real contact involved in Point Kickboxing, just as it is in Point Karate tournaments. However, the contact is well controlled and well-officiated to keep it within the rules. Occasionally, you will see a bloody nose or black eye. However, we are proud to say that after two years there have been no knockouts in our events and we plan to keep it that way.
I will say this again, if you have not tried IKF Point Kickboxing...you should! I think you will be surprised at the experience!
We would like to invite you to our next Doubleheader Kickboxing event Oct. 9th, 2004 in Roseville, CA. We will have a IKF Point Kickboxing tournament in the day and later that evening there will be a Full Contact Kickboxing Smoker featuring assorted styles and fighters from across the state. Its a full day of Kickboxing entertainment for all! Here's an idea, since you will be in town for one of the events, why not bring fighters for the other event? More info. at www.akpromotions.org/Events.htm.
Special Note: Thanks to all of the fighters, coaches, spectators, fans and volunteers that made this event successful.

IKF Point Kickboxing...Your Next Step Out of the Gym!
IKF
Point Kickboxing Competitors
Motivated
by 4’ Trophies!
Reported
by Johnny Davis
(Results from April 3rd PKB in Roseville)
It
would not have taken much for one to see that there was lots of tension brewing
before this past weekend’s IKF Point Kickboxing event. The competitors paced
the halls of the Lord’s Gym as preparing for an Olympic event.
The looks intensified has the rumor of the beautiful four feet trophies
came to fruition as they were being unloaded from the delivery van. “Oh man, I
want to take one of those babies home,” I witnessed one participate whisper.
I knew then…it was on!
I will say this again and
again, if you like Kickboxing, you are missing out on a great event with lots
of
good action! Although the
tournament is still rather small, at least in my perception, it’s not short on
action. I mean, where else can you
pay $5 dollars as a spectator and see up to twenty matches?
The diversity of the participants range from seven to forty seven and all
of them wanted to drag the “four footer” out and load it in their vehicles.
Some would have this honor while others would have to wait until next time.
All are literally winners at these events because every participant
received an award for having the courage to enter. (some winners shown from
the JD Kickboxing Club of Rocklin, CA at right)
The
always-supportive IKF Chief Referee Dan Stell ( at left from previous
event) took the lead officiating all of the bouts.
Also,
Master Instructor Rubi Navarro of Navarro’s Kenpo and Muay Thai
Kickboxing of San Francisco, CA gave decisive calls to each bout.
The little ones
started the matches for the day and the action was the impressive. Gabiella
Orteza of Rocklin edged out a victory over the tough Matteo “Machine
Gun" Contartese also of Rocklin, CA in the PK -14 –8-10 year old!
This was a tough match to call and went into a one-minute overtime!
Evan Morrell of Rocklin
won his third- First Place trophy out of three events in the past with a
win over Jessica Cullen (2nd Place) and Sean Cronin (3rd
Place) both of Rocklin. Evan really
understands the concept of Point Kickboxing as his continuous rapid-fire kicks
and punches bombards his opponents!
Rich Davis (1st
Place) is getting more impressive each time out.
He throws an assortment of spin kicks combined with jump kicks and lands
punching in a variety of combinations that dazzles the onlookers!
Rich’s first win came over the aggressive twenty nine year old Lilia
Garcia (3rd Place) of San Francisco, CA (the only woman in this
event and she had to fight in the Junior Advance division. Because of her small
stature, this division suited her best. The junior boys where exactly her size
and skill level.)
Next, Rich would meet the
always-improving Cameron Jones (2nd Place) of Rocklin in a
tough match that went two additional overtime rounds.
Those in attendance loved the action and both Rich and Cameron understood
even more the importance of conditioning!
Jason
Susdorf of Woodland, CA, is a junior with skills that will need to be
reckoned with if he continues in the PKB events but more so, if and when he
decides to go into full contact events. His
moves are slick and cagey! His thin
built reminds me of another great blast from the past Curtis “the explosive
thin man” Bush. Jason won
first place over Eric Rivera- Sacramento, CA (2nd Place) and Aaron
Wieand- Rocklin, CA (3rd Place).
Jason is the son of well-known instructor in Woodland, CA Mr. Dell
Susdorf who was beaming with pride as he carried his son’s trophy out of
the gym.
In an
exciting men’s lightweight division, Jeff Cessford of Sacramento would
take first place over Licolns’s Alex Orteza (2nd Place) and Jerimiah
Lewis (3rd Place) of Woodland, CA.
Orteza looked as though he would take the division with his impressive
win over Jermiah but due to poor conditioning was barely able to complete the
last bout. He vows to be more
prepared for future events and is eager to prove he can rise to the top.
The PIR 27
(International Rule –low kick-) Beginner lightweight division saw Steve
Rivera – (1st Place) San Francisco, CA win a close decision
over Chris “the cerebral assassin” Lugatiman (2nd Place)
of Vallejo, CA.
In the final
division of the evening, (PIR 32- Advance Heavyweight) the flexible and talented
Charles Caesar (1st Place) of San Francisco, CA won a tough
overtime decision over Zak McBride (2nd) of Sacramento, CA.
Bill Huchet also of Sacramento took third place.
All first place winners were very
pleased to win the four-foot trophies! They
seemed eager to get back and show it off to their friends!
If you want to get your students
started the right way…make sure they take the right and first step out of the
gym with IKF Point Kickboxing ã.
Hope to see you at the next on August 7th!
Special thanks to all of the
parents from my Kickboxing program. Thanks
too to some of the newcomers like those from the Marcus Reaves Academy of
Martial Arts of Sacramento and Darryl Liner’s Kenpo and Karate of Sacramento.
Thanks also to World Eagle Claw Martial Arts, Navarro’s Muay Thai and
Kickboxing, Woodland Self Defense School of Karate and Kickboxing, Aztec
Kickboxing of Dixon, CA. and the others I may have missed.

IKF Point Kickboxing event or would like more information contact me (Johnny
Davis) at (916) 780-7483. E-mail johnnyd@akpromotions.org

Updated Feb. 9th, 2004
IKF
Point Kickboxing
It's About Style
Results From Last Weekend's Event - Reported by PKB Director
- Johnny Davis
Roseville, CA, USA: It is apparent to many who attend the IKF Point Kickboxing tournaments that these events are vital to the growth of the sport of Kickboxing. Unfortunately, more trainers and instructors have not caught on to the idea and are simply missing out on great opportunities to nurture and grow their fighters. Every event, I see a potential star in the making and get chills sometimes as I witness the enthusiasm from the onlookers. One thing that I'm noticing as I mention in a previous article is that more point karate practitioners are finding their way to the Point Kickboxing arena. Some are transitioning well while others come with the idea that the same point fighting style with hands to side will work in a point kickboxing tournament. Well, be warned, it won't!
You must be prepared to fight the "style" of the kickboxer. Guard up like a boxer and before and after the kicks. Its true… styles make fights. This weekend I saw those that have potential to be very good kickboxers but will have to make the adjustment for the fighting style in the gym first. They came out with good kicks but with guard down. Those that had competed in past Point Kickboxing tournaments simply wore the storm, kept the pressure on and later picked them apart with kickboxing techniques.
My advice for those that are thinking about the transition from point karate to Point Kickboxing should jump in now. The difference is becoming obvious from those that have competed in the initial event from one just joining. Those who started with Point Kickboxing trained for them and understand what it takes to win and are doing so consistently.
IKF Point Kickboxing celebrates its two-year anniversary in March and is catching on. The tournaments remain small and quaint with as little as 30 competitors and as many as 80 for a single event. This past weekend's event was again up against four point karate tournaments in the area and this had an effect on the size of the event but not on the action. I remain confident that IKF Point Kickboxing style tournaments will eventually stand strong to the traditional point karate tournament! Thanks to all the schools and Instructors who came out to support the event. Your vision is sincerely appreciated. We hope to see YOU at the next event in late April or May of this year. Please find below the result from this past weekend's event held at the Lord's Gym in Roseville, CA-USA (only division winners listed)
Some winners from the last IKF Point Kickboxing tournament held Feb. 7, 2004 in Roseville, CA - Members of Johnny Davis Kickboxing Club of Rocklin, CA

Navarro's IKF Point Kickboxing
Grand Championship Winners Announced!
By
Johnny Davis
This past weekend Professor Carlos and Rubi Navarro hosted another excellent martial arts tournament. The tournament was held at the Terra Nova High School in Pacifica, Ca. Approx. 300 competitors from across California and abroad competed in forms, weapons, point karate sparring and IKF Point Muay Thai and IKF Point Kickboxing divisions. The IKF Point Kickboxing divisions had several matches that were very competitive and with lots of action! It seems that some competitors are starting to build a following and, or at least bringing large groups to cheer them on! Its exciting to watch the fans get into some of the matches as their enthusiasm shows in their screams, yells and stomping bleachers! The Next event is October 4th in Roseville, CA. For more information on IKF Point Kickboxing contact PKB Director Johnny Davis at (916) 780-7483 or johnnyd@netwiz.net.

IKF Point Kickboxing© Grand!

Point Kickboxingã takes another step forward! $$$$
Cash Awards * Team Competition * Fourth Place Awards
Johnny Davis and his A. K. Promotions company are taking the IKF Point Kickboxing© tournaments to the next level in making it more like the traditional point karate tournaments. Not in style of fighting but in the awards. The next installment of PKB will be held October 4th, in Roseville CA. However, this time competitors will not only compete for nice trophies but also have the chance to win Grand Championship CASH! That's right CASH!
There could be approximately $1000 dollars in cash prizes at this event depending on participation. To make this tournament even more unique, it will feature Team Competition that will allow groups of three (3) in a specific division (Women, Men and Juniors) to win trophies and CASH ! Fourth Place Awards will also be awarded, giving almost everyone a chance to win!
Back in May of this year, the PKB tournament was held in conjunction with IKF Pro FCR World Champion Dave Marinoble's
Martial Arts tournaments. However, this time the entire venue will be dedicated
to the PKB tournament giving the ability to run up to four rings at a time. (normally
only two floor rings are used) The Marinoble Kickboxing training facility
is located at 600 Commerce Drive in
Roseville, CA 95678. It's over 6000 square feet and seats up to 400 spectators
with a ring. It is a perfect venue for IKF Point Kickboxing© and small amateur full contact events.
The PKB tournament will have divisions for beginners and advanced competitors. Anyone with under four years experience will be in the beginners division. Those holding the rank of Brown /Red belt or above will be in the advanced division regardless of length time in the martial arts. Davis notes "what we have found is the experience below the brown and black belt level in Karate type style matters some but really doesn't give the competitor much of an edge in PKB tournaments. However, after the brown belt level there seems to be a noticeable gap when a brown or black belts competes against a beginner Kickboxer." He continues, "since we have been doing the tournaments we have seen black belts lose decisively to a beginner Kickboxers, but we want to err to caution and keep the tournaments as safe as possible."
All competitors are reminded that contact is strictly enforced
in these tournaments! The cash awards should not be seen as an incentive to go
full contact. It is a semi-contact continuous sparring event and KO's and TKO's
Are Not
Allowed! If you knock someone
out, you will be disqualified. "The PKB tournaments were designed to
assist the beginner without the fear of KO's and to give the more experienced
competitor an opportunity to spar diverse competition. If for some reason you or
your school sees this competition as something other than the previously stated,
its not for you," says Davis.
October 4th PKB Advanced Registration Is Now Open! Norgol Excites Crowd Again!
Reported by PKB Director
Johnny Davis
Roseville, CA, USA:
Jab! Cross! Front Kick! Jab! Double Jab! Round Kick! Spinning Back Fist! These
are the type of well controlled punches, kicks and non stop combinations you can
expect to see when James Norgol of Roseville, CA fights
PKB! Many had a chance to witness him in action this past
weekend in one of the IKF
Point Kickboxing© divisions that was held at the Dave
Marinoble's Kickboxing facility in Roseville, CA. James
took first place
over John Pritting of Dixon, CA in a division that was packed with a lot
of talent. The forty year old Norgols feels that
IKF
PKB is right for him and it allows him to
practice the techniques he trains with daily in the gym. "This is
perfect for me" he states. Norgols also stood out in the last
IKF
PKB tournament held in February earlier this
year in Rocklin, CA when he also took first place in the men middleweight
division.
James who's trained by IKF Pro FCR Middleweight World Champion Dave Marinoble is certainly one to watch in the near future! The tournament was held in conjunction with Dave's 'in-house" Martial Arts tournament but was open to other schools. Divisions like weapons, kata's, and grappling were well received by the hundreds of spectators in attendance. This Point Kickboxing tournament was as expected about half the size of the normal eighty or so competitors. Mainly because it was seen as more of a division as oppose to an entire tournament for solely Point Kickboxing©. However, the setting was great and the action was hot! Thanks to all instructors, fighters and volunteers that attended and supported this event. Also thanks to special referee, promoter etc. Dan Stell for his assistance running the main ring. We look to see YOU at future IKF Point Kickboxing© events and invite other tournament promoters to include this great division in their upcoming events.

Note: Special thanks to Manuel Vizcarra instructor for the Aztec Kickboxing School of Dixon, CA for having the most students and most wins at the tournament. Manuel has proven again that he truly understands the value of IKF Point Kickboxing© and seems to train as well as prepare his students well for each event. Congratulations to all the winners listed below as well as the others who participated and took "the next step out of the gym" and competed in IKF Point Kickboxing©! Here are the Results:

IKF Point Kickboxing©
Marching
ON!
Rocklin, CA, USA:There
was no question to whether the City of Rocklin, CA USA was 'rocked" this
past weekend because the answer is clear. YES it was! Johnny
Davis' Art
of Kickboxing Promotions company
and the IKF promoted yet another
successful Point Kickboxing tournament at Rocklin's Sunset Community Center.
Hundred of spectators, participants and volunteers came to assist with the event
and witness the action. The Sunset Center is equipped with a huge kitchen area,
well lighted stage, comfortable seating, meeting rooms and even a balcony area
for cameras. With the ability to seat up to one thousand spectators, this venue
makes a great host venue for Point and full contact Kickboxing and Davis' plans
are to Bring It On!
Yesterday (Saturday) Davis' IKF Point Kickboxing© tournament would certainly be the best yet for IKF Kickboxing. Not only was the pre-registration strong but at 9:AM sharp, fighters begin showing up for registration with hopes of taking home one of the beautiful trophies that would be awarded to the winners. The registration was steady until the first tournament meeting at 11:30 AM. The elimination would start shortly after noon for a fine day of good, clean competition.
During the meeting, several instructors attending had some
concerns about the tournament being a one round elimination event, stating that
it would give the fighters a better chance of winning in a dual elimination
bout. Reluctantly, Davis agreed to try
this for the junior divisions which would allow them to fight two one minute
rounds as oppose to one, one minute round. As Davis
continues to develop IKF Point
Kickboxing© on the
tournament circuit, its clear he wants to do what's best for the participants.
However,
during the event some of the same instructors who insisted on the dual
elimination had a different opinion as they saw many of their fighters gasping
for air and lacking techniques. However, the instructors were quick to make a
point 'that perhaps we should have competed in a PKB event first before
making such a strong suggestion for the dual elimination.' Since the
inception of IKF Point Kickboxing©, it's been said that this event
challenges one's conditioning much more than Point Karate because of the 14 and
16 oz. boxing gloves and the continuous domination style fighting.
Dual Elimination matches are up for review for future events and may become more realistic as instructors and participants learn the importance of proper conditioning in Point Kickboxing©. As some of them suggested, the tournament gave them a good idea of what and how they will need to adjust their training in order to be successful in Point Kickboxing©.
Children seven and under (boys and girls) division kicked off the competition that got everyone excited and cheering for the "little champs!" The 8-10 year olds came out in droves for this event as they had to be split into three divisions in order to give more competitors a better chance of winning as well as not allowing them to fight too many times in one day. As it stood, the winner of the event could have possibly fought up to five or six times or more, far too many times for this division.
Junior boys and girls, women and the men's divisions would follow with exciting matches that kept the cheering spectators on their feet! It would be one of the men matches towards the end of the day that would be one of the best example of Point Kickboxing©. These two men went toe to toe for the full two minutes, both landing well placed and controlled kicks and punches but this bout would end in a draw! Therefore, after a short rest, they had to fight another one minute "draw breaker round" and it was awesome! Sweat, blood (nose bleed) and determination was the only thing between these two as again they went head to head for the first and second place trophy! The crowd was going crazy, cheering each fighter! In the end, there would be a split decision winner but as promoter Davis looked on, he was compelled to give the contender a first place trophy for making such an exciting fight for the spectators and showing us all the true meaning of having grit and desire to WIN! The center referee, judges and the spectators burst into a loud and boisterous standing ovation to show their approval!
As Point
Kickboxing©
continues to march forward to obtaining its place on the long standing Point
Karate tournament scene, it will have to constantly review and make adjustment
to continue its productive path. Several promoters are inquiring as well as
posting events for Point
Kickboxing©
tournaments. Soon the IKF/PKB Circuit should be in full affect and offering
exciting semi contact tournaments across the country and abroad! This past
weekend, Rocklin, CA USA was introduced for the first time to the new wave in
martial art tournament competition. Based on the responses from many that
attended, its future is secure!
Davis
offers a special thanks to all the volunteers, instructors, competitors and
spectators for making the event successful. For more info, contact

MORE On Point Kickboxing©
Point Muay Thai Division Under Review
Although,
the "American" Kickboxing (PK) division was very strong this past
weekend at the IKF Point
Kickboxing©
tournament in Rocklin, CA USA and made the event successful and profitable, the
Point Muay Thai division (PMT) will have to be reviewed to whether it is
productive to continue in IKFPoint
Kickboxing©
Tournaments. Although, many MuayThai fighters requested this division be a part
of the tournament, their support of it seems to say something totally different.
Hundreds
of dollars in trophies were bought in advance for these divisions and without
participation, this becomes what any good business person calls a "bad
investment."
"Future PKB tournament participation from the
Muay Thai community will determine the fate of the Point Muay Thai (PMT)
divisions in IKF Point Kickboxing© and "Point" Muay Thai
tournaments." Says Davis,
IKF Point Kickboxing© Director.

Footnote
IKF Point
Kickboxing© was specifically designed for
the beginner Kickboxer but will also assist the advanced Kickboxer to better
their skills. Point Kickboxing©
allows them the opportunity to concentrate on technique as opposed to focusing
on not being knocked out. There are no knockouts allowed in IKF Point Kickboxing© and contact is strictly enforced. You can only
win a bout on points. The true difference here is the style. For years, Point
Karate tournaments have flourished all over the country but the techniques one
uses in a Point Karate tournament (backfist, ridgehands etc.) are mostly
ineffective in Kickboxing.
Point Kickboxers have to maintain the form and
style of a Kickboxer or most certainly face defeat. Competitors who've done
Point Karate tournaments and even Domination style fighting find
Point Kickboxing©
totally different. One big difference is the 16 oz. gloves and "real"
boxing techniques. If your guard is not up and chin down, you are more likely to
be out pointed in the one to two minute "continuos sparring" bout.
Point Kickboxing allows you to keep the fighting
form of Kickboxing as opposed to switching back and forth from Karate. IKF Point Kickboxing© is not only the next step out of the gym for
the eventual full contact fighter but is another outlet for the
IKF to continue building the sport of
Kickboxing's bright future.

IKF Point
Kickboxing© is really catching on since the
first "official event" held earlier this year at San Jose's, CA USA
Evergreen Community College. Along with
Mr.
Carlos Navarro's (Right) division of IKF
Point Kickboxing© in
his popular martial arts tournaments back in September in Pacifica, CA USA, the
upcoming event will be the third and largest. "We have doubled our
flyer distribution and correspondence with area Martial Arts Schools. We have
also increased the sizes of our awards that should really be pleasing to those
winning them." Says Davis.
Davis
continues, "There have been several inquires about promoting IKF Point Kickboxing© and we anticipate working with more events in
2003." Davis has three other events scheduled for 2003 - May
3rd, Sept. 6th, and December 6th all in the California area. He states, "I
know of at least three other promoters with intentions of hosting events next
year so we should have an exciting year for the IKF
Point Kickboxing©
division!"

Professor Carlos Navarro Scores Big
With
IKF
Point Kickboxing©
Reported by IKF &
PKB Director Johnny Davis
This past weekend was a great one for The Carlos Navarro
family of Navarro's Kenpo, Karate and Kickboxing Studio out of San
Francisco, CA, USA.
He and daughter Ruby,
(Left) were the promoters of one of their outstanding Martial Arts
tournaments that are legendary in Northern CA, USA. It was a well run tournament
that included many divisions such as Forms, Point Karate fighting, Weapons and
Musical Katas that delighted the full house of spectators!
But of course, the primary focus of the IKF was the newly formed IKF Point Kickboxing© that's really catching on and many are anxiously awaiting more events! The Navarro family really scored big with this tournament that hosted well over 300 competitors and at least 80 of them were in the IKF Point Kickboxing© (Full Contact Rules, International & Muay Thai divisions) Men, Women and Juniors lined up in full protective gear including 12 to 16 oz. Century boxing gloves to sport their wares and see who could walk away with a beautiful 5' trophy.
As the IKF Representative for this event, I was very impressed to see how well everything was operating. The only glitch was at the end of the week the Navarro's received news that the original location of the tournament (Oceana High School) would not be completed from a remodel and the tournament had to be move to another gym. Even with this interruption, the Navarro's reorganized the event and moved forward for what was to be a tournament to remember.
The IKF Point Kickboxing© division of the event was packed with good action! For the most part, the action was controlled and although there were some warning for contact, there were no disqualification's or notable injuries.
Its clear that trainers and fighters are beginning to see that IKF Point Kickboxing© will be around in the future and are just now starting to adjust from what they saw as no other option - Full Contact - to a more controlled environment - Point Kickboxing- that allows them to practice their art in a more controlled setting. They are paying closer attention to the "semi-contact no knockouts" rules that are posted on the IKF Point Kickboxing© pages and are training and dressing accordingly. ( In the Point Kickboxing divisions all participants are required to wear long trousers and in the Point Muay Thai divisions shorts are mandatory - as well as full protective gear in all divisions)
After all, the end goal of the IKF is the create another avenue for the beginner to participate without the fear of being knocked out or seriously injured. This will allow them to increase their skill level so that one day they will be able to participate in full contact events such as the 'Golden Gloves" of Kickboxing tournaments The IKF USA Nationals, North American Championships and the IKF World Amateur Championships.
Professor Navarro is one of the true pioneers for "Continuous Sparring" events in Northern California and has true vision for the sport as he has joined up with IKF Point Kickboxing© . He is sure to continue to play a major role in organizing and hosting future IKF events. Congratulation to Team Navarro on a job well done!
Next Year, IKF Point Kickboxing© and Point Muay Thai events will be more available. We are making a lot of progress in organizing the IKF Point Kickboxing© Circuit. We are speaking with instructors and promoters about hosting events in their cities. The first tournament of 2003 will be held in Rocklin, CA, USA on February 1st at the beautiful Sunset Center. (2650 Sunset Blvd, Rocklin, CA.)
Continue to visit the IKF site for posting of additional tournaments across the United States. IKF Point
Kickboxing... Here to Stay!
Photos
by Gene Fields & DeWitt
Elledge
The IKF sanctioned the
first exclusive Point Kickboxing tournament in America this past weekend in San
Jose, CA, USA. Base on feedback from some of the participants, it was a
successful venture.
(See participants
comments below) A total of 57 fighters crammed the Evergreen
Community College Tactics Room to sport their talents as they
competed for first, second and third place trophies engraved with the IKF Logo. It was obvious that the competitors were
anxious and nervous to compete, many for the first time. But after the first
kick or punch was thrown, nerves went out the door! They gave all they had to
claim the gold on this day and some would be successful! Those who fell short
still went away with the feeling of accomplishment because they "Walked the Walk!!
There would be some glitches in this weekend's event that would
cause some delay for the event to start on time. However, most in attendance
waited patiently for several late registering fighters and their weigh ins to be
completed before matchmaking could be done. However once the event started it
ran fairly well with juniors 8 to 10 years of age, women and men divisions
starting as one finished and ending the event two hours earlier than expected.
There were many lessons learned that are sure to make future events even more
successful. Additionally, there were two disqualification for contact and
misconduct. IKF President Steve
Fossum, and
Event Promoter and IKF Director of Marketing Johnny Davis made
it clear at the beginning of the event that contact and attitude had to be
controlled or there would be consequences. Learning to control your techniques
as well as attitude demonstrate true champion qualities.
There were many instructors
and local families who stepped in to offer their services and help the event
move along. Some as judges and timekeepers while others for registration and
concession. There are far too many to mention here, but they know who they are
and should know that their work and participation in the event was very much
appreciated! Center Referees and judges included IKF
co-founder Danny "BamBam" Stell, Ruby and Mr.
Carlos Navarro, along with former IKF
Amateur U.S. Champion Greg Kirkpatrick and current IKF World Middleweight Champion Dave "Madman"
Marinoble were nothing short of great in their officials performance.
Special thanks also to the competitors who were the true
"Champions
of the Event!"

Mr. Davis
I
competed at your first ever point kickboxing tournament this past weekend.
Although I Placed 3rd, I would just like to say that it was an experience I will
never forget. It was exciting, fun, and opened my eyes to see what real
fighting is all about. Up until that tournament, I thought that I was very
conditioned and a good fighter, because I was a good sparrer. Well, this
tournament showed me
things that I never
knew before about conditioning and fighting. I realize now what you meant about
walking the walk! You see, I trained myself for this tournament, drove in from
San Bernandino (45 min east of LA) and fought. For a long time now I was
searching for the answer of what was it that I needed to work on as a martial
artist, and this tournament pointed it out. Just as you said before the
tournament, that "this tournament was to make you better fighters,"
which I believe it has. Not only that,
but
I realize how much more I want to fight in Amateur kickboxing, and my goal in
the future is to go to the (IKF) Nationals and win. Thank you for opening my
eyes and taking my fighting ability to a whole new level! With thanks, Byron V.
Dear Mr. Davis,
I want to start first and
foremost by saying thank you to all those that helped to put on the PKB
tournament March 30th, 2002. It was a great show, and it seemed as though a good
time was had by all those that participated. You had asked for some feedback,
and I just thought I would pass along my view of the day as I saw it. Keeping in
mind that this was the first tournament of it's kind, of course

there
are going to be some bugs that need to be worked out over time. Some of these I
believe will happen naturally from event to event; some will probably be worked
out as a product of your continued efforts to streamline the shows, ever
attempting to put on the highest quality events possible. That being said, I
probably can't say anything regarding the event that you haven't already thought
of to help make it run even more smoothly. I would however, like to comment on a
couple of the aspects of the show in particular which I felt worthy of
mentioning. Firstly, I thought that once the actual competition began, you and
the staff did an excellent job keeping the action going, and moving quickly
through the various divisions. There is little worse than a slow moving
tournament, and you did a great job at making sure that that was not the case.
The second thing I wanted to mention, was about the consistency of calls on
contact. I understand that it is largely a matter subjectivity, but I do feel it
would be helpful in the future (for competitors and trainers alike) to have the
referees judge contact calls as similarly as possible. It was tough to get a
gauge on what was allowed, and what wasn't in certain cases, and at times it was
a bit frustrating to keep up. I know that this alone is a difficult task, simply
because of the nature of the issue, but on the off chance it might prove
helpful, I thought I would mention it. All-in-all it was a great day, and I very
much enjoyed meeting you. I thank you once again for all your efforts. Please
keep me informed as to upcoming events such as this, as I have more students
wanting to participate in the future.
Best Regards, Erik V. W.
